Upcoming Microsoft Price Increases—Will Your Law Firm Pay More in 2026?

Team STS |

Microsoft has recently announced upcoming price hikes set to take effect on July 1st, 2026. Costs will increase 5-35% across most 365 suites and products, and customers will begin to see these changes reflected in their first renewal after the July 1st deadline.

Law firms using the following products will see the change reflected at their next renewal date after price hikes take effect:

  • Business Basic
  • Business Standard
  • Office 365 E3
  • Microsoft 365 E3
  • Microsoft 365 E5
  • Microsoft 365 Fi
  • Microsoft 365 F3

Why are prices increasing?

The main driver behind the 5-30% product price increases across Microsoft services is due to the integration of Copilot AI into all Microsoft plans, as well as additional product improvements and value adds.

Feature updates include:

  • M365 Business plans will double available inbox space with another 50GB
  • For organizations on/considering going to O365 E3 or M365 E3, Defender for O365 Plan 1 (an email security solution) will be included
  • Advanced Intune features are coming to M365 E3 and M365 E5, including Remote Help and Intune Plan 2
  • Security Copilot credit will be included in M365 E5

Per MSN, Microsoft states that “the changes are being made to reflect the significant number of new features added to its productivity tools over the past several years, including stronger security protection and the growing use of artificial intelligence in everyday work. Microsoft explained that many [organizations] today face higher IT demands, more complex cyber threats, and increasing pressure to move toward AI-supported workflows. Because of this, the company said it has been investing in improvements across Microsoft 365, and the upcoming price adjustments will help support continued development. ”

When will my law firm see these changes in our Microsoft bills?

When your bill increases will depend on your existing renewal date for the products you are using. If all of your product renewal dates fall before July 1st of this year, you will not see a price increase until 2027, upon your next renewal date(s). You may be able to co-term your renewal dates to shift some renewals taking place after July 1st to an earlier date to lock in your pricing for another year, but will need to be proactive in accomplishing that change before the deadline.

Can we avoid paying more for the affected Microsoft products?

These price increases will eventually take effect for all Microsoft subscribers—but, you may be able to delay or offset the cost increase by leveraging promotional pricing.

Recently, Microsoft shared a list of currently available promotional price offers on Copilot and 365 product bundles with partner organizations. Partners can share available promotional opportunities with your law firm and evaluate them for fit and efficiency.

Be sure to begin exploring opportunities for cost savings early. If you start today, your IT partner will have the necessary time to find the most cost-effective solution for you, implement it smoothly and with minimal interruption, and make sure that won’t cause problems down the line.

You should also take this time to review your current Microsoft billing and licensing plans to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your investment and avoiding common issues like duplicate licensing, premium fees on month-to-month licenses, and many other areas of overspending. To help you do that, we’re offering a free Microsoft Optimization Assessment.
